Toyota recalls another 2.3 million vehicles because of sticking accelerator pedals

Toyota owners in Egypt and the Middle East should take this recall very seriously. After recently issuing a huge recall for 4.2 million vehicles due to floor mats reportedly jamming the accelerator pedal in a fully open state, the company confirmed that it would implement brake override systems in order to stop cars which aren’t responding to the normal brakes. Now, Toyota is issuing another recall, but this time for “only 2.3 million vehicles, which makes it now almost 6.5 million recalled cars.

The reason for this big recall is 'unintended acceleration' , but not due to any floor mats, as Toyota says the gas pedal mechanism might have become worn, and won’t return to its regular position as fast as it needs to, and in some cases might remain in a partially open position.

The cars involved in the recall are: 2009-2010 RAV4, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2005-2010 Avalon, 2007-2010 Camry, 2010 Highlander, 2007-2010 Tundra and 2008-2010 Sequoia. The many owners of such vehicles should contact their Toyota dealer and schedule a service check-up as soon as possible, especially if you noticed any lack of response from the accelerator pedal.

In the USA several people died in accidents which involved the above-mentioned models. Unfortunately neither Toyota nor the official authorities have announced yet how many cars are effected in Egypt and the Middle East region.

And this is the official statement of Toyota:

TOYOTA ACCELERATOR PEDAL RECALL IN EUROPE

There is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position.

This is caused because the accelerator pedal mechanisms concerned may become worn. This progressive wear, combined with certain operating and environmental conditions, can cause friction in the mechanism to increase and intermittently result in the accelerator pedal being harder to depress, slow to return or, in the worst case, stick in a partially open position.

In case of occurrence, the driver may notice that the accelerator pedal is progressively harder to depress or is slower to return. A rough or chattered feeling may also be experienced when depressing/releasing the accelerator pedal.

Toyota will implement a recall in Europe for this matter. The details of corrective action and implementation will be communicated directly to customers with vehicles potentially affected.

The models and exact number of potentially affected vehicles is under investigation.

A running change in production using different parts has already been implemented model-by-model in the European production. Therefore there is no need or intention to stop production in Europe.

End of statement.
